Confidence Equals Discipline + Preparation

If you’ve been out of the job market for a while due to illness, caretaking duties, parenting, or a layoff, it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed about getting back in. Or maybe you’re job seeking for the very first time and not sure where to begin. In any case, you may think the world has raced ahead of you and you’re starting a lap or two behind everyone else.

You’re probably excited about the idea of taking on some new challenges and adventures, but you’re not sure you’re ready. It might surprise you to know that nearly everyone has been where you are now. And we can learn from their experiences–how they managed to go from being unsure of themselves to feeling confident.

At Kyushiki-Ryu Kempo-Jutsu, Okinawan Martial Arts studio, they understand that the first step in any kind of training is discipline and the confidence in knowing that you’re in control. This comes through training and practice. By applying the same principles – discipline and confidence – you can prepare yourself for anything that lies ahead.

Physically Prepared

Being prepared physically is a critical component of being confident. It’s hard to project your confidence if you’re tired, unenergetic, fatigued, or stressed. By concentrating on improving your diet with less sugar, sodium, and saturated fats, you automatically improve your overall sense of wellbeing. Substituting those with foods high in nutrients, fiber and protein will provide the energy you need to be your most productive.

Another way to be prepared physically is through a commitment to daily exercise. Doctors recommend we get 150 minutes a week in moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise. If you’re like most people, you’re not getting nearly that amount. Carve some time out of each day to get in at least 7,000 to 8,000 steps. Thirty minutes of exercise is only 2% of your day, so if you think about that small investment compared to the dividends it pays, it’s well worth beginning a habit of a daily exercise routine.

Having the Right Tools

One of the most important tools in our search for the job we desire is having a properly written resume. It’s also one of the most difficult things to get right. Thankfully, you don’t have to start from scratch. By using a free resume builder, you can create a stellar and professional resume. You can choose from a library of professionally designed templates, then add your own copy, photos, colors, and images. You can get an idea of the kind of information your prospective employer is looking for by going to their website. Your local library will also have books with helpful guides on how to write a resume.

Becoming Your Own Boss

Another big leap for many people that can cause some anxiety is leaving the perceived stability of working for someone else and starting a new business all on their own. Again, you’re not alone. There are over 800,000 entrepreneurs in America and, by and large, they all started out just like you, nervous and feeling unprepared.

There are steps you can follow for how to set up a new company. For instance, by developing a business plan first, you’re creating the blueprint for all the other steps that follow, like deciding on a business structure, choosing a name, registering with the state, and applying for licenses and permits. The cost of getting the business started is pretty low, only $49.00!

Of course, most businesses will require capital beyond that, but having the business plan in place makes it more likely you’ll be successful in obtaining loans, grants, or finding interested investors.

Being confident in stepping into a new experience is all about being disciplined and prepared. Remembering that every successful person started out pretty much where you are now and, like you, what got them where they are now was the simple art of being disciplined and being prepared.

When you’re ready to take on the challenge of Okinawan Martial Art for Self Defense and want to train in the old-style combat forms that were so successful for Okinawans in their life and death struggles to combat their enemies, contact Kyushiki-Ryu Kempo Jutsu or call (574) 217-5438.

How to Foster Leadership Skills as a Coach or Mentor

Coaching and mentoring both play an important role in the development of leadership skills in adolescents and adults. Whether you coach a sports team, mentor first-time entrepreneurs, or offer life coaching to teenagers, your job is to create an environment that facilitates the development of key leadership skills. But coaching isn’t as easy as telling someone else what you already know. At Kyushiki-Ryu School of Kempo-Jutsu, we know that being a great martial arts coach is all about a commitment to lifelong learning and self-improvement. Here are some resources to help you step up your coaching game!

Advance Your Skills

As someone who shapes young minds, it’s important to be a positive role model. Furthering your education, displaying healthy behaviors, and demonstrating good leadership skills will help you improve as a coach.

Understand Key Leadership Qualities

As a mentor or coach, your goal is to help your mentees develop qualities that will position them to be effective leaders. These qualities will also help you become a better coach!

  • The best leaders are innovative, courageous, and not afraid to challenge the status quo.

  • Effective leaders are authentic and are willing to be vulnerable.

  • Great leaders know how to listen to others and make reflective—not reactive—decisions.

  • Strong leaders know when to ask for help and how to give credit where it’s due.

Master Constructive Criticism

Filtering yourself will not nurture the development of strong leaders. If you want to help your mentees improve, you will need to offer feedback that empowers them to overcome failure and keep trying until they succeed.

  • Don’t make it personal. Focus on the person’s actions rather than their qualities or traits.

  • Offer specific details and actionable advice so they know what to work on.

  • Balance your constructive criticism by offering some positive feedback at the same time.

Are you in charge of coaching the future leaders of the world? Shaping the minds of teens and adults is a very important job. Help your mentees develop the skills they need to be strong, confident, and authentic leaders by improving your own skills!

How to Create an In-Home Martial Arts Studio for Your Kids

Perhaps your child usually spends a couple of nights each week at their martial arts studio, learning how to kick, spar, and practice self-defense. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has likely made it too risky for their studio to continue operating as usual for the time being. If you want to cheer them up and help them get back into the habit of practicing, check out these resources to get started with building your own in-home martial arts studio!

Select a Studio Space

Having a martial arts studio in your home can give your property value a boost if the space can be used for multiple purposes. Ideally, you should design a room that could also be used as a yoga studio, home office, or child’s playroom.

  • Enlist your kids to help you clear the clutter out of your garage. When it’s cleaned out, you might be surprised by how much room is available for a martial arts studio.

  • If your basement has been unused for years, it might be a great spot for your studio. Check out these remodeling tips to transform this space.

  • Thinking about building a studio in your attic? Make sure that this space is free of pests.

  • After you’ve renovated space for your studio, you might be curious about moving forward with a few other projects to boost your home’s appraisal value.

The Gear Your Kids Need

When it comes to martial arts gear, it’s all too easy to purchase the wrong piece of equipment if you don’t do your research first. Check out these resources before you go shopping.

  • Trying to navigate the wide selection of martial arts gear on your own can get confusing, so you may want to email a local studio to see if they have any recommendations.

  • What kind of flooring is right for your studio? Check out these guidelines to determine which type you should install.

  • Confused about the many types of punching bags available? Compare and contrast a few different models before making a purchase.

Safety Tips for Home Workouts

Is practicing martial arts riskier than other sports? If you and your kids make it a point to follow the safety tips outlined in these resources, it certainly doesn’t have to be!

  • Your kids will need to take an occasional day off from working out. Here’s how you can help them make the most of active rest days.

  • Keeping a first-aid kit in your studio is absolutely crucial. These guidelines from UCI Health will help you stock your own DIY kit.

  • If your child gets injured while practicing, you may have to help them treat it at home. These simple tips will help prepare you.

Your child might miss practicing with their friends and instructors at their old studio. However, having a home studio is the next best thing! Until they can enroll in classes again, they can continue polishing their skills by working out at home.
